Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania History
The name “Garnet Valley” originated from the garnet mines that were operational here until 1912, marking the area’s early contribution to the mining industry. These mines were a significant part of the area’s early industrial activities, having been established in 1879 by Herman Behr & Co. of New York. The mining operations continued until 1912- over three decades of garnet extraction which contributed to the local economy and the broader mining industry. The garnet mines began on a farm owned by Charles Williams in the mid-1870s, before attracting the attention of a notable mineralogist who recommended the area to Herman Behr & Co. The primary mining pit was notably large, measuring 85 feet in depth and 200 feet in width. These operations faced challenges, particularly from weather-induced flooding in 1900, which eventually led to the mines’ closure in 1912. This area’s active mining adds a distinctive historical layer to Garnet Valley, distinguishing it from surrounding areas with its unique industrial heritage.
Today Garnet Valley is considered a prosperous area, with a higher-than-average median household income compared to both the state and national averages. This economic stability is reflected in the well-kept properties and the community’s overall appearance.
Garnet Valley has been home to several notable individuals who have made significant contributions in various fields, including rock and roll musician Bill Haley.

How Can You Tell If Plants Have Problems?
This is one of the questions we hear often at Burkholder PHC. Your observations are vital to keeping your landscape plants in good health. Most of the plants we work with are relatively long-lived, and each growing season should be a predictable process of dormancy through full vigor to senescence. Some of the most common symptoms in landscape plants include yellowing or browning of leaves, wilting, or leaf drop.
